Police have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect in a mass shooting at Brown University that killed two people and injured nine others, sources close to the investigation told CBS News.

Authorities are now searching for the individual and a car believed to have been rented by the suspect. The identity of the suspect remains undisclosed.

Investigators are also probing a potential connection between the Brown University shooting and the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, who was shot two days later.

The ongoing investigation has now entered its sixth day, with police actively engaging the community for tips, reviewing doorbell camera footage, and conducting door-to-door inquiries.

A scheduled news conference by the Providence police was abruptly canceled, but they anticipate releasing further updates as the investigation develops.

On Monday, Professor Gomes Loureiro, originally from Portugal, was shot multiple times in his Brookline, Massachusetts home, approximately 50 miles from Providence. A rental car matching descriptions from both incidents has been reported.

Previous comments from federal authorities suggested no initial links existed between the two cases, but ongoing investigations may reveal closer ties.

Police are keen to identify a person seen in close proximity to the suspect and also released footage of a masked individual who appeared to be surveying the university campus shortly before the shooting.

Frustrations expressed by the public regarding the slow pace of the investigation have prompted Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha to assert confidence in the eventual apprehension of the perpetrator.

The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's capture. The attacks occurred amid final examinations at Brown University, claiming the lives of students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
