An image of an Israeli soldier apparently hitting a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon has prompted widespread condemnation after being widely shared online.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was stunned and saddened by what happened. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed apologies to the Christian community, stating: We apologise for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt. The statue was reportedly on a crucifix outside a family home in Debel, where residents have remained amid military hostilities.

Father Fadi Flaifel, leader of Debel's congregation, denounced the desecration, asserting, It goes against the declaration of human rights, and it doesn't reflect civility. He claimed similar acts had occurred previously.

The Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the image and expressed its disappointment, emphasizing that such conduct contrasts with the values expected of its troops. The Israel Defense Forces stated that appropriate measures will be implemented against those involved and that they are collaborating with the Christian community to restore the damaged statue.

This incident occurs amid continued Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon following a ceasefire with Hezbollah, stretching back over six weeks of conflict. The ceasefire has sparked criticism, particularly towards the observed aggression against religious sites.

The incident has drawn responses from various religious and political figures, including US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, who called for swift, severe, & public consequences. Right-wing US commentators like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene have also critically highlighted the situation, suggesting a growing dissatisfaction with Israeli actions among US constituents.

Furthermore, recent surveys indicate declining support for Israel in the United States, coinciding with a reported rise in hostilities towards Christianity in the region, as noted in various reports, including one from the Rossing Center.

Despite the adversity, Netanyahu asserts that the Christian population in Israel flourishes compared to other Middle Eastern nations, highlighting Israel’s commitment to freedom of worship.

Continued tensions, including recent Iranian conflict and ongoing military campaigns in Lebanon, leave many questions about the region's future and the protection of religious and cultural symbols.
