Three young brothers have died in Bonham, north Texas, after falling through ice on a private pond on Monday. Cheyenne Hangaman, the boys' mother, recounted her harrowing experience, stating she tried to rescue them by lifting them out of the water and placing them on the ice, but it kept breaking under their weight. There was three of them and only one of me... that's why I couldn't save them, she told CBS News, expressing her heartbreak over their loss.
The boys, aged six, eight, and nine, had been playing near the pond, approximately 100 feet from the house they were staying at. The youngest brother reportedly fell in first while attempting to ice skate, prompting the two older brothers to jump in after him. When I seen them, they were struggling, and I know their bodies were already in shock, said Hangaman, emphasizing the chilling temperature of the water.
In her desperate attempt to save them, Hangaman struggled against the icy water and was ultimately rescued by a neighbor. Emergency workers later pulled the two older boys from the water, while the youngest was recovered after an extensive search.
Describing her sons, she shared that EJ aspired to be a football star, Kaleb had a passion for dancing and singing, and Howard loved making people laugh. The boys' school expressed devastation over their loss, offering counseling to students and staff as the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise from winter activities and the importance of monitoring children's play near frozen bodies of water.
