A private jet crashed at a regional North Carolina airport and erupted into flames Thursday, killing seven people, including retired NASCAR star Greg Biffle and three members of his family, officials said.

The plane took off Thursday morning from Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles north of Charlotte. Shortly after taking off, the jet returned to the airport and crashed while attempting to land, according to flight tracking data.

Investigators reported that conditions included drizzle and low clouds at the time of the crash.

Victims Identified

Among the seven aboard were Greg Biffle; his wife, Cristina Grossu Biffle; and their children, Ryder and Emma. Additional victims included Craig Wadsworth, Dennis Dutton, and Dutton’s son Jack, all cherished members of the NASCAR community.

Greg Biffle, 55, is remembered for his more than 50 victories across NASCAR's circuits and his pioneering achievements in multiple series. He spent most of his career associated with Roush Fenway Racing.

The aircraft, a Cessna C550, was en route to Florida and subsequently the Bahamas, and is known for its safety record as a mid-sized business jet. It was registered to Biffle's company and was built in 1981, valued between $1 million and $10 million depending on outfitting.
