As Ukraine endures one of its coldest winters, record missile strikes have wreaked havoc across the country, leaving thousands without heating and encouraging President Volodymyr Zelensky to call for urgent international intervention.
The attacks, described by Zelensky as an unprecedented assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, coincided with a drastic drop in temperatures to -20C (-4F), causing more than 1,000 tower blocks in Kyiv to lose heating. Private energy company DTEK reported that the missile and drone strikes marked one of the most powerful blow to Ukraine's energy sector this year, with Zelensky stating that Russia is choosing terror instead of diplomacy to express its aggression.
This assault comes on the heels of a failed energy truce that was previously brokered by political figures including Donald Trump and which had ended only days earlier. Zelensky expressed concern that Russia used this time not for peace negotiations, but to stockpile missiles for upcoming attacks, urging Ukraine’s allies to tighten pressure on Moscow.
During the frantic night of the attacks, residents sought shelter in metro stations, many setting up tents on the frigid platform to fend off the cold. As explosions sounded throughout Kyiv, people were left without heating or electricity, with many resorting to soup kitchens for hot meals.
Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept only a fraction of the missiles fired by Russia, with Zelensky emphasizing the urgent need for timely delivery of air defense systems from NATO allies to safeguard civilian lives.
In his response, NATO's Secretary-General underscored the alliance's support for Ukraine, advising member countries to bolster their missile stockpiles to assist in the fight against Russian aggression.
Despite continued Russian attacks designed to undermine civilian morale and stir dissent against the Ukrainian government, the resilient spirit of the people remains intact as they face significant hardships.
