In a heartfelt testament dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis stated his wish to be buried in a humble tomb at the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major, an ancient shrine located in Rome that has been a significant site for popes throughout history. His desire for a simple grave, adorned only with the name “Franciscus,” reflects his commitment to humility and his deep connection to the Marian icon, Salus Populi Romani, housed nearby.
Throughout his twelve-year papacy, the Pope emphasized the importance of this basilica by visiting it both at the beginning and end of his apostolic journeys. His first day as pope was marked by a quiet visit there, and even during health challenges, like his recent stay at Gemelli Hospital, he maintained this tradition.
The Pope’s will specified that his tomb should be situated in the aisle next to the Pauline Chapel, paying homage to the Virgin Mary for her tender guidance and care. The Salus Populi Romani icon, believed to have been painted by Saint Luke, holds particular importance for Francis. The Jesuit order's long-standing devotion to this icon has influenced the Pope's actions, further highlighting the connection between his faith and the legacy he wishes to leave behind.
By choosing this site for his eternal rest, Pope Francis hopes to silently thank the Virgin Mary, underscoring his belief in the importance of simplicity, tradition, and maternal care in a life dedicated to service.
