Sir Keir Starmer has described President Donald Trump's remarks about British troops in Afghanistan as insulting and frankly appalling.

On Thursday, Trump claimed that US allies stayed a little off the front lines during the conflict and questioned NATO's commitment. Starmer noted that if he had mispoken in that way, he would certainly apologise.

Trump's comments have sparked international outrage, particularly due to the sacrifices made by UK soldiers; 457 British service personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan after NATO's collective security clause was invoked following the 9/11 attacks.

Starmer added, I will never forget their courage, their bravery, and the sacrifice they made for their country, noting that many soldiers returned home severely injured.

Starmer's sentiments reflect concerns echoed by the families of the fallen. Diane Dernie, whose son suffers from severe injuries sustained in Afghanistan, criticized Trump for his remarks, describing them as the rantings of a child.

Political leaders across the UK condemned Trump’s statements, with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch asserting that it dishonors the memories of lost soldiers and stresses the need for responsible dialogue about military contributions.

The UK remains committed to honoring the sacrifices made by its troops while pushing back against derogatory comments regarding their service.
