NEW YORK — Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor-elect of New York City, took to social media on Sunday to address the rights of immigrants, especially in light of a recent ICE raid in Manhattan's Chinatown. In a powerful video, Mamdani affirmed his commitment to the city’s immigrant population, stating, “New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support, and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
Mamdani articulated the legal rights that immigrants have when confronting federal immigration authorities. He reiterated that individuals can refuse to communicate with ICE agents, have the right to film the interactions, and deny entry into private spaces without a judge’s warrant. “ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent... If you’re being detained, you may always ask, ‘Am I free to go?’,” Mamdani explained.
This statement comes on the heels of mobilizations by demonstrators who protested against an ICE operation targeting individuals on Canal Street, emphasizing the community's resilience and solidarity. Mamdani’s clear stance is a signal of the support for the 3 million immigrants living in New York City, reinforcing the values of inclusion and human rights.
Prior to this surge of advocacy, Mamdani had a notable conversation at the Oval Office with former President Donald Trump, illustrating the ongoing dialogue surrounding immigration policies in the United States today.
